To benefit the residents of Addis Ababa through making city-based laws that ensures good governance, development and democracy by way of participating the public, monitoring and evaluating the executives, and informing the public regularly about the city councils’ activities and the decisions made.

Overview
The Addis Ababa City Council was established in 2008. The city Council Consists of 138 Seats of which 72 are males and the remaining 66 are females. The Council is administerdby three administrators, the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Secretary. The Council enacts laws on issues falling within its jurisdiction. It also supervises, evaluates, and supports the executives which are found within the city administration.
The council comprises of five standing committe which are responsible for various sectors that are found in the city.Primarilly the city council is responsible for enacting laws and proclamations that falls within its circle.It is also bound to formulate policies and public announcements that are important and believed to be paramount for the overall political ,economic and social development of the city as vested responsibility by the city administrations charter proclamation N0.361/2003.
The council is also responsible for supporting,suppervising and inspecting the respective councils that are found in various hierarchy in the city.The city consists of 127 councils including the main city council which is accountable to the federal government and to the residents of the city. Out of the total 127, 10(ten) are sub-city councils which are responsible to conduct support,suppervision and inspection activities over the executives found within the sub-city.The remaining 116 councils that are found within the city are district councils which are in charge of supporting,and suppervising various sectorial executives found within the respective districts.In this connection,the sub-cities are accountable to the city council while the district councils are answerable for the sub-city councils with respect to the chain of command instituted.In a nutshell,the city council oversees all councils within the respective sub-city and district thereby renders the necessary support as entrusted by the charter.
